York and District Chess League - Cup Final

The York and District Chess League came to a conclusion for Scarborough Chess Club with the Cup Match against a team from Eagle and Child. On paper the Eagle and Child team were favourites as they had won the league and defeated Scarborough in both league matches. In previous years the Cup had been decided on grading as both years the final had been drawn. For the final this year Scarborough had a marginally higher grade so needed to win the match.

In a tense final, five games were drawn leaving Simon Dixon as team captain needing to win to secure the cup which he did. Congratulations to all who have played in the team.

Team News

The Scarborough Chess Club Team is reaching the end of the 2024/25 season in the York and District Chess League. With two matches outstanding it is going to be a close fight for second place between Scarborough and a team from York University who are currently tied on 18 points with the tie break favouring the University team.

In the Knock Out event the Club has reached the final for the third year in a row. Both previous finals were decided on tie break with the Club winning the first and losing the second. In the final the Club faces the winners of the Division and so will be the underdog in the match.

York and District League

The club has now reached the half way point in the York and District League. The Club are now in third place in the league. The league resumes towards the end of January after the Christmas and New Year break. The Chess Club will also be taking a break with no club nights on Monday the 23rd and the 30th.

Scarborough Chess Club in York and District League

Scarborough Chess Club has made a perfect start to the 2024/25 York and District League Division 2 by winning its first four matches. This is the best start to the season that the club has made.
The Club faces a busy November with four more matches before the Christmas break.

Doug Rawlinson Trophy 2024

The Scarborough Chess Club started the new chess year with the traditional Doug Rawlinson Rapid Play event on the 9 September 2024. The event was won by Paul Hutchinson with five points out of five. Tom Hall came second with four points out of five and won the best performance prize.

ECF County Championship Finals

Scarborough Chess Club member Colin Weller was successful in playing for Yorkshire in the ECF County Championship Final for Under 1650 players. His win contributed to the 10 -6 victory of Yorkshire over Greater Manchester. The match was played at the at Bradford Latvian Club.

York and District Chess League

Scarborough Chess Club completed another successful season in Division 2 of the York and District Chess League. The number of teams had increased to ten resulting in 18 matches with each team played home and away. Scarborough almost achieved the perfect mid-table result winning six matches, drawing six matches and losing six matches with 50 points for and 51 against. Tom Hall achieved the best result with 7½ out of 9.

Scarborough Chess Congress 2023

The Scarborough Chess Congress was held over the weekend 27 to 29 October 2023 with well over 300 players from all over the country participating. The Club was well represented with six members participating in different sections and two former members of the club also returning to play. None made it into the prize list but Tom Hill was awarded for the best performance by a Scarborough Club player.

Scarborough Chess Club has made a good start to the new season in the York Chess League winning its first match.

The Club will be running the Doug Rawlinson Rapid Play competition on Monday the 16 October commencing at 7.30pm at the Roscoe Rooms, Roscoe Street, Scarborough. Entry on the night for existing members or anybody who wants to give it a go. This will be a good warm up event for the weekend of the 27th-29th October 2023 when Scarborough will be playing host to the annual Chess Congress at the Spa. About 300 people are expected to participate making it one of the largest competitions in the country. It is anticipated that a number of players from the club will be competing. This year there will also be a special one day competition for juniors on the Saturday.
